Disobedience Isn’t Worth It—It’s Costly

Updated: 10 hours ago

I learned a hard but freeing lesson recently: disobedience is not worth it—and it’s costly.

From series: What’s Your Story?

Disobedience Isn’t Worth It—It’s Costly

For almost two years, I went through a cycle of unnecessary struggle, trying, to stay optimistic and wondering when things would change. But it wasn’t until I finally obeyed a specific instruction God gave me, and that's when I got the answer.

God revealed something that pierced my heart: If I had done what He asked, when He asked, I would’ve received what He promised months ago.

That moment hit me hard.

The very thing I feared and prayed would never happen again—happened!

I felt like Job when he said,

“What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.”— Job 3:25

I missed out on an opportunity and blessing all because I didn’t obey.

And here’s the thing:

I didn’t realize I was being disobedient at first. I let pride and the lies of the enemy convince me what God asked wasn’t that urgent. But obedience delayed is still disobedience—and it comes with consequences.

When God showed me the truth, it hurt. Part of me wished I hadn’t known. Yet, deep down, I was thankful—because the truth is what finally set me free.

Knowing that I had the power to prevent much of the struggle I experienced was painful, yes—but it also meant I can now step into a new season through obedience.

I needed this truth to escape my struggle.

God had already provided a roadmap for achieving financial freedom. But I made one decision not to follow one simple instruction, and that one choice delayed the timeline God had set for my breakthrough.

It caused a domino effect. Every next step—the next chapter, the next opportunity—was connected to that initial act of obedience. But because I didn’t take that step when I should have, the rest became harder, heavier, and more frustrating than it had to be.

Obedience would have made the way easier, lighter, and clearer.

Looking back, I realized my disobedience was rooted in pride and believing the enemy’s lies. But thank God for His trustworthiness. Even though I delayed the promise, I didn’t destroy it. His word still stands. What He promised years ago will still happen.

Now that I'm moving into my next season, I've learn the value and importance of obedience, and the ramification of disobedience.

Obedience comes before the demonstration or results

We only see the results—whether it's the fulfillment of God's promises or signs, wonders, and miracles—when we first listen and obey Him. Like Moses and Aaron in Exodus 7:10, they saw God's power at work because they did exactly as the Lord commanded.

God might instruct us to do something as simple as reading His word. While it might seem like you are just reading a bunch of Scriptures, it actually holds the answers and solutions you've been asking for and need.

By engaging with those scriptures, you'll find healing, guidance, instructions, and more. However, if you dismiss it as just reading, delay it because it seems uninteresting, or let pride or laziness take over, your life may continue to feel unfulfilling, stressful, confusing, or stuck in the unwanted circumstance it’s in.

God may instruct us to speak His Word daily until we see results, yet to us it can feel mundane, unappealing, boring, or even ineffective—surely there must be a better way. This is just like the man who was told to dip seven times in the muddy river and struggled to accept it (2 Kings 5:10–14).

That kind of thinking and attitude is exactly where Satan wants us to remain, since he is the one who endorses it, turning it into a strategy to block what could have been our blessing and solution.

It’s only after we obey, that we begin to see the magnitude of obedience (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). Then we'll see how people like Abraham (Genesis 22:18), Moses (Exodus 19:5), and even Jesus Himself (Philippians 2:8–9) were able to do and have the things we read about—and how we too can, and will, do the same and even greater works (John 14:12). That’s how we live a life that is extraordinary.

Just Do It!

Anything God ask you to do is powerful regardless of how small it is, and because He said it, it has powerful results.

If you’re stuck in a season that feels like it’s dragging on... ask yourself: Did I obey the last thing God told me to do?

Don’t let pride or fear keep you from what God has already prepared. Your next victorious chapter may be on the other side of that one simple “yes.”

A call for salvation

When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, His Spirit becomes one with yours. This is one of the greatest blessings of salvation. You no longer need to go through anyone else to reach God—because you and He are now united.

All you need to do is receive the gift of salvation by repenting of your sins, inviting Jesus into your life, and confessing Him as Lord. This involves acknowledging your sin and need for forgiveness, believing that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, and surrendering your life to Him.

As Romans 10:9 declares, “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” And 1 John 4:15 assures us, “If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.”

When you take this step, you are saved and welcomed into God’s Kingdom—becoming a member of the family of Christ!

Here's a Prayer that you can pray to get saved:

Jesus, I confess that You are Lord, and I believe in my heart that You died and rose again for my sins. I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I invite You to come into my heart and life, and I receive You as my personal Lord and Savior. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

After this step, pray for guidance to find a ministry where you can grow spiritually, gain knowledge about the kingdom, and begin living the abundant life promised by Jesus.
