Nothing New Under the Sun: How Pride "Still" Destroys Nations, Leaders, and Lives

Let Pharaoh’s story be a warning!
The story of Pharaoh in Exodus may seem distant and ancient, but its lessons are shockingly relevant today. Prideful leadership, national suffering, and hardened hearts didn’t end with Egypt. They’re still playing out in boardrooms, governments, churches, and homes.
Let’s explore how God, pride, and leadership intersect—and what we’re meant to learn from it.
From Series: Life lesson learned from the Bible - The story of the Pharaoh and the Israelites in Egypt

God Is Greater Than His Creation
In Exodus, God's power is displayed through the plagues sent to Egypt. Pharaoh’s magicians could replicate some of the miracles (like summoning frogs), but they couldn't stop them (Exodus 8:7–8). Why? Because creation can never overpower its Creator.
Just like a builder knows every part of their creation, God knows how to expose, correct, or dismantle anything and anyone He has made.
History Repeats—And So Does Human Nature
Ecclesiastes 1:9 tells us, "There is nothing new under the sun." The patterns of pride, rebellion, and suffering aren’t unique to Pharaoh’s time.
In modern leadership, we see similar traits. Consider recent political figures marked by arrogance and resistance to wisdom. When leaders reject truth, the people pay the price, just as Egypt suffered under Pharaoh’s stubbornness. And just like then, advisors, citizens, and systems collapse under the weight of prideful decisions.
Scripture Helps Us Make Sense of the Present & the Future
The Bible isn’t just a history book. It provides context for today’s chaos and a roadmap for the future.
Just as the Israelites journeyed to the Promised Land, believers now await the new heaven and earth. Exodus helps us understand what obedience looks like—and what happens when leaders, or individuals, resist God’s will.
Bad Leadership Hurts Everyone
Pharaoh’s decisions didn’t just cost him personally—they devastated an entire nation. Livestock died. Crops failed. Water was polluted. Fear spread. And in the end, even his son perished.
“Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?” – Exodus 10:7
This verse shows that even Pharaoh’s own advisors knew the truth. Yet he refused to yield.
Today, when national or spiritual leaders are corrupt, the people suffer.
Proverbs 29:2 says:
“When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.”
The Destructive Power of Pride
Even after suffering plague after plague, Pharaoh hardened his heart. He refused to surrender—even after he knew he was wrong.
“But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart.” – Exodus 8:15
Sound familiar? How often do we return to our old ways once the pressure lifts? And once the pain in gone?
Pharaoh’s resistance didn’t come from ignorance—it came from pride. And it led him to ruin. Even when his world collapsed, he pursued the Israelites and was destroyed in the Red Sea (Exodus 14:26–28). His pride literally chased him into death.
Pride Isn’t Just Personal—It’s Contagious
Shockingly, the Israelites who had been victims of Pharaoh’s pride began to act the same way. In the wilderness, they grumbled, rebelled, and resisted God’s voice repeatedly (Exodus 32:9; 33:3).
This shows us something important: Pride is a spirit that spreads if it’s not checked and rooted out.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart… see if there is any offensive way in me.” – Psalm 139:23–24
Pride Blocks Purpose and Delays Destiny
Pharaoh could have avoided the destruction. He had every opportunity. But he chose rebellion—and paid the price.
We do the same when we reject God's way. Pride convinces us we’re right, even when everything’s falling apart.
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” – Proverbs 14:12
Pride delays healing, damages relationships, and keeps us from opportunities God designed to bless us. A stubborn spirit is not just a character flaw—it’s a spiritual danger (1 Samuel 15:23).
Final Warning: Let God Deal with Your Pride
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6
Pride is what led Satan to fall (Isaiah 14:12–15). It’s what kept Pharaoh from listening. And it’s what keeps many today from surrendering to God.
But there’s still time to turn around.
Let Pharaoh’s story be a warning, not just to nations and leaders, but to us personally. Pride kills purpose, but humility opens doors.
Let God break the cycle in you so you don’t have to learn the hard way.
How Pride "Still" Destroys Nations, Leaders, and Lives
Pride is one of the biggest downfalls, setbacks, and hindrances in a person's life. When you see what causes a person to fall—pride is always attached to it. Therefore, don't take pride lightly. It will take you down in the same way it did with Satan.

A call for salvation
When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, His Spirit becomes one with yours. This is one of the greatest blessings of salvation. You no longer need to go through anyone else to reach God—because you and He are now united.
All you need to do is receive the gift of salvation by repenting of your sins, inviting Jesus into your life, and confessing Him as Lord. This involves acknowledging your sin and the need for forgiveness, believing that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, and then surrendering your life to Him.
As Romans 10:9 declares, “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” And 1 John 4:15 assures us, “If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.”
Another important step is to renounce the kingdom of darkness. By doing so, you are breaking any covenant or partnership with it and recommitting yourself to the Kingdom of Light—Jesus Christ.
When you take this step, you are saved and welcomed into God’s Kingdom—becoming a member of the family of Christ!
Here's a Prayer that you can pray to get saved:
"Jesus, I confess that You are Lord, and I believe in my heart that You died and rose again for my sins. I know that I am a sinner, and I repent and ask for Your forgiveness. I invite You to come into my heart and life, and I receive You as my personal Lord and Savior. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Renounce the Kingdom of Darkness
Right now, I renounce and break all ties, covenants, and agreements with the kingdom of darkness, knowingly or unknowingly made. I reject Satan, all his works, and every influence of evil over my life.
Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Lead me, teach me, and establish me in Your purpose. From this day forward, I belong to Jesus. I am a child of God, and I walk in the light. In Jesus' name, Amen.
After this step, pray for guidance to find a ministry where you can grow spiritually, gain knowledge about the kingdom, and begin living the abundant life promised by Jesus.
